Free Entry 1 (Week 6)

This is an entry that is in the first few stages of writing, so help would be welcomed. I wanted to include a technique that Katie Chaple uses, which is when you use the title as the first line of the poem...

I am a self proclaimed pack-rat...

Just like my Grandmother.
A hoarder of knowledge
and school supplies.
Each weekend
I open the door to my father
reminding me of the filing cabinet
with no files
sitting against the blank wall
in my room.
Each day
when questions,
to which no one wants answers,
are asked,
I am one to respond
reminding me of the filing cabinet
with all the files
sitting against the pre-frontal cortex
of my brain.

  1. The hoarder of knowledge is a good idea since we usually think of hoarders as having a bad habit, but "knowledge is power," right? It does kind of clash with the idea of a filing cabinet though, especially an empty one. That could be used to the advantage of the piece. Maybe the filing cabinet in the character's room is empty and the one in her brain is overflowing onto the floor around it. I think the lines "I am one to respond/ reminding me of the filing cabinet" could be improved by talking about how the character "actually" reaches into the cabinet to pull out answers. Hoarding knowledge is an interesting idea for sure though.

  2. This draft caught my eye with the name. And i saw that you were inspired by a junkyard quote you had just underneath it- great inspiration! I do agree with David about how a filing cabinet clashes with the idea of hoarding in that it seems organized, maybe you could use the idea of a desk, one that is cluttered and then a clean one. But i would love to read this again, such an awesome topic!
